Description

Air fryer blooming onion brings classic crispy onion petals together with bold seasoning and a lighter cooking method.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Oil spray (neutral oil such as avocado or canola)

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion and trim the top, keeping the root intact. Make vertical cuts to form petals, stopping about ½ inch from the root. Gently separate layers.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, paprika, cayenne, cumin, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and water until smooth.
  4. Coat the onion thoroughly in the seasoned flour, shaking off excess.
  5. Dip the onion into the egg mixture, allowing liquid to reach all layers.
  6. Return the onion to the flour mixture for a second coating, pressing gently.
  7. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Place onion root-side down in the basket and spray generously with oil.
  9. Air fry for 15–18 minutes until golden and crisp, spraying lightly if needed.
  10. Rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a sweet onion like Vidalia for best flavor and tenderness
