Description
Air fryer blooming onion brings classic crispy onion petals together with bold seasoning and a lighter cooking method.
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Oil spray (neutral oil such as avocado or canola)
Instructions
- Peel the onion and trim the top, keeping the root intact. Make vertical cuts to form petals, stopping about ½ inch from the root. Gently separate layers.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, paprika, cayenne, cumin, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and water until smooth.
- Coat the onion thoroughly in the seasoned flour, shaking off excess.
- Dip the onion into the egg mixture, allowing liquid to reach all layers.
- Return the onion to the flour mixture for a second coating, pressing gently.
- Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Place onion root-side down in the basket and spray generously with oil.
- Air fry for 15–18 minutes until golden and crisp, spraying lightly if needed.
- Rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a sweet onion like Vidalia for best flavor and tenderness
- Spray oil generously to ensure even browning
- Reduce cayenne for a milder version
- Serve immediately for maximum crispness
