Description

A delicious homemade version of Applebee’s famous chicken wonton tacos, featuring crispy baked shells, savory hoisin chicken, and a tangy sesame slaw.

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

For the Slaw:

  • 1 bag (397g) coleslaw mix
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey

For the Shells and Toppings:

  • 16 wonton wrappers
  • Cooking spray or olive/canola oil
  • Sweet chili sauce, to serve
  • Chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Sesame seeds, to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly brush wonton wrappers with oil and drape over a baking dish or muffin tin to form taco shells. Bake 6–8 minutes until crisp.
  2. Heat sesame oil in a skillet. Add garlic and ginger, then chicken. Cook until browned, then stir in hoisin and soy sauce. Simmer until coated.
  3. Toss slaw mix with green onions, sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Let sit 10 minutes.
  4. Fill baked wonton shells with chicken, top with slaw, drizzle with sweet chili sauce, and garnish with cilantro and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • Assemble tacos just before serving to keep shells crispy.
  • Use chicken thighs for extra juiciness.
  • Add a squeeze of lime for a fresh finish.
