  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cherry pie filling or homemade cherry compote
  • 1/2 cup cherry liqueur (optional)
  • 1 cup crushed chocolate cookies or chocolate granola
  • 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate or chocolate curls
  • 1/4 cup candied nuts (optional)

Optional homemade cherry compote:

  • 2 cups frozen cherries
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water

Optional Garnishes: whipped cream, fresh cherries, chocolate curls, festive sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Cut cooled chocolate cake into cubes and set aside.
  2. To make compote, simmer cherries with sugar and lemon juice until juicy; stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thick. Cool completely.
  3. Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  4. Layer trifle: cake cubes, cherries, liqueur (optional), whipped cream, crushed cookies, and chocolate. Repeat layers.

Notes

  • For best texture, assemble at least 2 hours in advance.
