A rich layered trifle featuring chocolate cake, cherries, whipped cream, and festive toppings—perfect for holiday celebrations.
Ingredients
For the trifle layers:
- 1 chocolate cake (9×13), cut into cubes
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups cherry pie filling or homemade cherry compote
- 1/2 cup cherry liqueur (optional)
- 1 cup crushed chocolate cookies or chocolate granola
- 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate or chocolate curls
- 1/4 cup candied nuts (optional)
Optional homemade cherry compote:
- 2 cups frozen cherries
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water
Optional Garnishes: whipped cream, fresh cherries, chocolate curls, festive sprinkles
Instructions
- Cut cooled chocolate cake into cubes and set aside.
- To make compote, simmer cherries with sugar and lemon juice until juicy; stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thick. Cool completely.
- Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Layer trifle: cake cubes, cherries, liqueur (optional), whipped cream, crushed cookies, and chocolate. Repeat layers.
- Finish with whipped cream and garnishes.
- Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- For best texture, assemble at least 2 hours in advance.
- Skip the liqueur for a kid-friendly version.
- Use brownies instead of cake for extra richness.
