Description

Warm candied yams baked in brown sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon create the perfect cozy side dish. Toasted pecans add crunch and depth for a holiday-ready favorite.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium yams (about 1 lb), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.125 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup pecan halves
  • 0.5 teaspoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Arrange yam slices evenly in the dish without heavy overlapping.
  3. Melt butter over medium-low heat. Stir in brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth and glossy.
  4. Pour glaze evenly over yams, ensuring full coverage.
  5. Cover tightly with foil and bake 25–30 minutes until fork-tender.
  6. Toast pecans in a skillet with vegetable oil over medium heat for 3–5 minutes until fragrant.
  7. Remove foil, sprinkle toasted pecans over yams, and bake uncovered 5–7 additional minutes to slightly caramelize.
  8. Rest 5 minutes before serving, spooning glaze over top.

Notes

  • Cut yam slices evenly to ensure uniform cooking.
  • If the glaze thickens too much while baking, add 1 tablespoon warm water and stir gently.
  • Toast pecans just until fragrant; they continue to darken after removal from heat.
  • For extra caramelization, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end while watching closely.
