Description

A cozy, old-fashioned dessert made with stale bread, a spiced custard base, and served warm with vanilla custard sauce. Perfect for holidays, gatherings, or using up leftover bread.

Ingredients

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 1 loaf stale French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 7 cups)
  • 3 cups 2% milk
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • 1 cup raisins (optional)
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place bread cubes in the dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk milk, eggs, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and allspice.
  4. Pour mixture over bread and let sit for 15–20 minutes to absorb.
  5. Add raisins if using. Drizzle melted butter over top.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Cool slightly and serve with warm vanilla custard or your favorite topping.

Notes

  • Toast bread in the oven if it’s not stale enough.
  • Soak raisins in warm water or rum for added flavor.
  • Add a splash of milk before reheating leftovers to keep it moist.
