Description

Golden, crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside, these homemade hush puppies are the perfect Southern side dish. Easy, flavorful, and ready in minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying (peanut or vegetable oil works best)

Optional Add-ins: diced jalapeños, shredded cheddar, or chopped herbs.

Instructions

  • Heat the Oil – Pour 2–3 inches of oil into a deep skillet or Dutch oven. Heat to 350°F (175°C).
  • Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Add Wet Ingredients – Stir in the onion, buttermilk, and egg until a thick batter forms.
  • Scoop and Fry – Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil using a spoon or small scoop.
  • Cook Until Golden – Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, until hush puppies are crispy and golden.
  • Drain and Serve – Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Keep oil temperature steady at 350°F to avoid greasy hush puppies.
  • Don’t overmix the batter; stir just until combined for a light texture.
  • Use a cookie scoop for evenly sized hush puppies.
  • Add jalapeños or cheese for a flavorful twist.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
