Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying (peanut or vegetable oil works best)
Optional Add-ins: diced jalapeños, shredded cheddar, or chopped herbs.
Instructions
- Heat the Oil – Pour 2–3 inches of oil into a deep skillet or Dutch oven. Heat to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add Wet Ingredients – Stir in the onion, buttermilk, and egg until a thick batter forms.
- Scoop and Fry – Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil using a spoon or small scoop.
- Cook Until Golden – Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, until hush puppies are crispy and golden.
- Drain and Serve – Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and serve warm.

- Keep oil temperature steady at 350°F to avoid greasy hush puppies.
- Don’t overmix the batter; stir just until combined for a light texture.
