Description

Crispy golden onion rings stuffed with gooey mozzarella cheese — these Mozzarella Stick Onion Rings are the ultimate party snack or game day appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 810 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs (panko recommended)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. Peel onions and cut into thick rings. Separate rings so you have pairs of large and smaller ones.

  2. Cut mozzarella sticks into pieces that fit between onion rings.

  3. Place a smaller ring inside a larger one and fill the gap with mozzarella pieces.

  4. Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with whisked eggs and milk, and one with breadcrumbs.

  5. Coat each assembled ring in flour, dip in egg mixture, then coat in breadcrumbs. Repeat egg and breadcrumb steps for extra crunch.

  6. Place rings on a tray and freeze for 1 hour to keep cheese from melting too fast.

  7. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry for 2–3 minutes per side until golden.

  8. Drain on paper towels and serve with dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use panko breadcrumbs for maximum crispiness.
  • Freezing before frying prevents cheese from oozing out too soon.
  • Try adding Italian seasoning or paprika to the breadcrumbs for extra flavor.
  • Bake instead of fry for a lighter version (425°F for 12–15 minutes).
