Description

A simple and irresistible Southern-style baked onion dish made with sweet onions, melted butter, and a rich blend of cheeses. Perfect for pairing with grilled meats, roasts, or holiday spreads.

Ingredients

For the Tennessee Onions

  • 3 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), sliced into ½-inch rings
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prep the oven and dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Slice the onions: Cut the onions into ½-inch rings and separate them.
  3. Layer the onions: Spread the rings evenly in the baking dish.
  4. Season: Drizzle melted butter over the onions. Sprinkle garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper evenly across the top.
  5. Add cheese: Combine cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Parmesan, then spread the mixture over the onions.
  6. Bake: Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until onions are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  7. Serve: Enjoy warm as a side to steak, chicken, barbecue, or holiday meals.

Notes

  • Use Vidalia or other sweet onions for the best flavor.
  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy twist.
  • Mix cheeses to your liking—Gouda, Swiss, or Pepper Jack work well.
  • For extra caramelization, broil the top for the last 2 minutes.
